China's New Auto Modification Regulations Legalize 16 Modification Projects

Recently, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers officially released the "Guidelines for Auto Modification Technical Specifications," which explicitly allow for 16 vehicle modification projects, covering popular areas such as ECU power tuning, body kits, and blade wheels. This major policy adjustment marks a new stage in the development of China's auto modification industry, moving from a gray area to standardized development.

The new regulations highlight the shift from "ban" to "open," focusing on balancing safety and personalized needs. Legal modification projects include: powertrain optimization, allowing engine performance enhancement through ECU tuning; exterior styling upgrades, legalizing modifications such as body kits, grilles, and side skirts; wheel style innovations, allowing for customized wheel changes; chassis and suspension adjustments; and intelligent retrofits.

The policy also streamlines the registration process, allowing for vehicle color changes to be registered online. This initiative addresses long-held consumer demand: according to a survey, 85% of car owners are open to modifications, but were previously deterred by regulatory restrictions.

This new regulation is seen as a "shot in the arm" to revitalize the trillion-dollar automotive aftermarket. Data shows that the size of China's automotive aftermarket exceeded 5 trillion yuan in 2024 and is expected to reach 7 trillion yuan in 2025. The implementation of new vehicle modification regulations will further unleash the growth potential of the modification industry chain, particularly in the new energy vehicle aftermarket.
